Classic Curried Vetkoek with Mince

Origin & History

Often sold at community bazaars or roadside stalls, vetkoek is a staple in Afrikaans and township cuisine alike.

Ingredients

  • 500g Ground beef
  • 1 Onion finely chopped
  • 2 tsp Curry powder
  • 1 cup Frozen peas
  • 1kg Cake flour
  • 1 packet Instant yeast
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • Warm water for kneading
  • Oil for deep frying

Method

    Sift flour, salt, sugar and yeast into a bowl.

    Add warm water gradually and knead into a smooth dough.

    Cover and leave in a warm place to double in size.

    Brown the onion and mince in a pan then add curry powder and peas.

    Shape dough into balls and deep fry in hot oil until golden brown.

    Drain on paper towels, cut open, and fill with the mince mixture.

Top Tips

  • Ensure oil is at 180C for frying|Don't overwork the dough after it rises|Use a slotted spoon to drain oil|Serve warm for the best texture
